Watching all of your videos by playlist so Im chiming in way after the fact. lol 10:56 It's the same reason we have still have lawns, imo [I find having/maintaining lawns to be generally silly unless you play lawn sports or have energetic kids/pets]. How many people who maintain a lawn actually ever USE it for anything?! Do they even care for it themselves or do they pay someone else to maintain it? It's a societal success judgement tool so you can measure yourself against your neighbor to enforce conformity with the majority. Cutting grass into a lawn also reduces the number of ticks on your property, I suppose, so that's a modern plus. LOL I view this mindset as a holdover from the 18th century, this idea that you are emulating the affluent if you have these things like lawns, fine carriages/things, and no scheduled activities that are mandatory to get through your day. Leisure is your job if you're aristocratic. Only the rich had the means to hire a hundred laboring-class people to scythe their grass short at very little or no charge. Lawn=Wealth. Inept-at-labor=Privileged Rich people didn't have to be good at anything. They just had to be wealthy, therefore powerful... and clever enough to preserve their power however they had to. So all the classes below the super wealthy would emulate the choices and habits of the financial tier immediately above them. You must be doing very well in comparison to others at your financial level if you have the some of the things that rich privileged people have, who are your betters. We all wish to better ourselves. I think it's a thought process that must be genetically handed-down to us at this point as well as a social/resource pressure nurtured in our local environment... as well as being a species-wide social behavior for tribal survival when there are 8.5 billion people surrounding us and closing in on us. A symptom of hierarchical thinking. Being self-sufficient is more fun, imo. I'd rather do it my way and do it myself so I learn a new skill to be more self-sufficient. Vicious but fun circle to be stuck in. 🧶

24:00 The Monitor was the new-fangled armor-plated warship used in the Am. Civil War, wasn't it? If so, then I think this is a rug design showing the shallow-draught boat with two guns that was used to bombard the shore from the water. I don't think it was able to go under water, but I'm not sure. Was it the first ironclad ship of the US's? (PBS had a nice documentary on it that I watched an eternity ago? LOL I don't remember...) Anyway, very cute rug!

1:47:07 My suspicion in the context of that sentence is that cygnets are referring to young swans [Cygnus the constellation is The Swan], not necessarily related to signet as an etymological spelling change. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it! LOL 🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢 1:54:30 I like that idea of the 'book' layout as a rug design method. Create a design, flip it horizontally on center line to double it then flip that new half vertically... and your design is nicely balanced with some natural visual movement because your eye jumps around the piece to find the repeats. Cool! Could be easily used for any number of subject matters that don't require up & down, just design. 🌟👉🏻Kent's book is reprinted [as well as 1 of his other rug books and also of his wrought iron design book [hoping they reprint his 3rd rug book sometime soon]] - just bought the 2023 edition of the book on Amazon, can't wait to flip through it, I love picture books and adore the time period he's writing in/about! 😁 Enjoyed this video very much even though its 2 years old! Timing was right to learn about Kent book💚💚💚

Here's a testament to the longevity of wool and linen. This item is possibly an ancient early 'rug' creation and I thought you'd like to read about it if you haven't heard of it before. At the very least, it might inspire a design element or two: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapestry_of_Creation Have a great week. 🧶

Wonderful Deana!! I totally understand the love for fiber. I really need to get better at spinning and need to find that dyer/supplier for those colors of bat. Love your witch! Can’t wait to get your book when it comes out. I will finish The Good Witch. She is getting close. There are parts I’m not satisfied with and parts I love. I’ll finish it and then may want to redo sections after I sit with the finish for a bit. I’m looking forward to sharing her to get feedback. Thanks so much for all you do!! As a spindle spinner, I have a stash of unspun fiber, too. I *love* how it hooks up, so lofty and beautiful. I also find it easier to pull up through the backing. The piece you're working on is delightful! Thanks for another informative video. 💖

Re Country Fair, Magpie III Does someone have an article about the 'Flax to Linen' process? Has that idea been done already? It seemed like an interesting topic for Magpie Times at some point if it doesn't fit this theme. During my Am. Rev War Living History reenacting days, I remember a person in IN who, every year at the event weekend, would demonstrate thrashing the flax stems against the 'nail' board to shred it up into threads [of a sort]. I was fascinated watching her for over an hour. 🐑🐏🐏🐑🐑 ruclips.net/video/7VKN04zmEjg/видео.html Amateur Flax process

26:44 Like Chicago, raise it out of the onion swamp! lol 23:27 I think it's CPTSD, lol. Often gets misdiagnosed as ADD. Many similar behaviors, very different causes. That's just me projecting my personal crazies, though. LOL I relate to a lot of the behaviors that you display, Deana. I like to blame mine all on Time of Life changes, but most of it is just me trying to cope w childhood triggers. Often failing but always getting back up and having another go, lol. But than again, I don't have your ridiculously crazy BUSY life, either. I would be frazzled in a little pile on the floor [decorated with all of the lint I've created chopping noodles] if I tried to keep all the plates spinning that you have going! lol Your'e so impressive how you distribute your energy! 👍Keep going!

58:58 IMO [in my opinion], the only thing you HAVE to do is take a hook and pull a thin chunk of material through another piece of backing material until you have a substantial amount of fabric/textile pulled through the other textile. Then you have to look at it to see what you've done. The End. I'm not a rug maker yet, I'm a fabric chopper. lol And a design doodler. I find doodling very relaxing. And a tool collector. I love textile-making tools. I hoard them for the fun of it. This channel/group may give me the justification for all that hoarding if it gets me to produce something with the tools/materials. Someday. But I do aspire to taking that chopped material to a hook and backing, so I can feel the joy of stepping on the result everyday. If I don't ever follow through though, I sure had fun chopping up my closet contents so it was a valuable experience already. No loss at any step of this process. Its therapeutic whatever level you get to. Hugs.

1:05:05 can you offer these items on your Amazon page? More accurately, are you going to offer your books and Magpie Times on Amazon any time soon? I bought your first book there and I would snap up the mags and Design Likes immediately if they were offered there. Just a thought. 🤗 54:03 dated 1950 Here comes the 'reading Latin numerals' lesson, lol : MCML ... M=1000 C=100 L=50 {D=500, X=10, V=5, I=1 ... these 7are the most seen/commonly used Latin numerals nowadays but more exist} 1000 + 900 [ 100 is subtracted from the second M because a smaller amt 100 is in front of a larger amt 1000, therefore in Latin you subtract the smaller amount from the following larger amount to its right-hand side, so 1000-100=900 ] +50 = 1950 Now you can figure out when books and movies were copyrighted/filmed, lol MCM=1900, MM=2000, then add up the bits that follow (i.e. 1949 MCMXLIX.... 2024 MMXXIV... 2004 MMIIII or MMIV, etc) High School Latin does come in handy in real life all the time for me {OK, Hollywood is the opposite of real life, but you know what I mean}. I thought my Latin teacher was fibbing to us but she wasn't, lol 📖 💚💚💚
